Allusion Poem & Graphic - Final

As I stray far from my flock,

I enter a valley of darkness.

I start to panic.

I begin to call out for help,

But I doubt my Savior will come.

I am lost.

I hear a voice calling out to me,

But I ignore it.

I continue to seek for the right path.

I try to find my way back to the Ninety-Nine,

But somehow, I tend to wander back into an empty, gloomy meadow.

I am searching.

As I see a bright light appear,

a voice calls out again.

I choose to finally listen.

I hear the voice say "Come and rejoice, for I have found you".

I am home.

  1. When selecting my mythological allusion, I sort of had a tough time. I narrowed my choices down to the two that I thought that were best. I wanted my allusion to be someone or something that I could really relate to. One was Athena, the goddess of wisdom. My other and final choice was the “Parable of the Lost Sheep”. I chose the Parable of the Lost Sheep because I can really relate to this story and I know it somewhat by heart. The meaning of this parable is that when we sin against God or disobey him, we wander away from his comfort. Therefore, we become lost. However, in the end, God is willing to forgive us and take us back into his flock, his kingdom. I can relate to this story because since I’m not perfect, I sometimes make bad choices which affects my relationships with others and causes myself to drift away from my family and friends. But, since they’re really important to me, I always try to find my way back into their hearts.
My process to creating my allusion poem was complicated, yet not so complicated. I laid out my ideas on a piece of paper and tried to incorporate those ideas into my poem. My ideas were mainly the comparisons I had between myself and the lost sheep. I wanted my poem to easily communicate my allusion to the audience. I mainly tried used figurative language in my poem. This allusion poem was similar to the self-metaphor poem we did freshman year. That’s why I didn’t really find it difficult to write it. However, I had difficult time finding the right words to use. Like what Mrs. Sueoka suggested, I tried to incorporate words that would link to the Biblical story. So I used words like flock, Savior, Ninety-Nine because of the ninety-nine sheep, and rejoice to make the connection.
For my graphic, I wanted to show how I found my way back to refuge. For my first draft, I was aiming for a light at the end of a very dark tunnel. I liked the concept, but I agree that it did look plain and did not have much Biblical connection to the story. For my final, it was suggested that I should put myself in a setting of a meadow to get that “lost sheep” feel, I guess. I decided to keep the sky a dark navy blue because in my poem I mention darkness and I wanted to show that. It also helped with the contrast of the glow. It helped make the glow stand out against the dark background. For photoshop techniques, I mainly played around with the color balance, saturation, blending modes, and blending options. I’m pretty satisfied with how the picture came out.
By doing this poem, I discovered more things about myself that I never really noticed. Through this poem, it shows how I sometimes make bad decisions and it causes conflict and trouble into my life. I now know that I have to teach myself how to make better choices, whether it’s school, friends, or family. By developing a habit of good decision making, it would cause less stress on everyone I know and myself as well.
